Employment and Business Assistance
Over the next five years, Mastercard has pledged $500 million to expand financial inclusion for Black individuals and businesses suffering from the COVID-19 pandemic. Mastercard’s new interconnected three-part initiative focuses on mobile transactions, increasing capital for Black-owned businesses and a partnership with government leaders to expedite city programs for seven hand-picked cities. More than 2 million Texans are currently out of work and, in response, the Texas Workforce Commission has committed $10 million dollars to a skills development fund to assist in job training. Read the full story via KHOU 11.
Racial and Gender Wealth Gap
The COVID-19 pandemic has widened the racial wealth gap as minority households are disproportionately affected by a loss of income. According to a national poll released this week, 62% percent of Latino, 60% of Black, and 55% of Native American households are facing serious financial problems since the pandemic began. Since February, women have lost over 6.1 million jobs, according to NWLC. This accounts for more than half of the overall job losses since the start of the COVID-19 crisis. In addition, new data released by the U.S. Census Bureau shows that, between 2018 and 2019, little to no progress has been made to close the overall wage gap between genders, with the average full-time working woman still earning just $0.82 for every dollar earned by men. A new study from Deutsche Bank shows Black and Hispanic Americans are experiencing a “racial tech gap,” which could threaten their future ability to obtain employment and grow their wealth in a digitized economy. Learn more.
In a recent blog post, Nicol Turner Lee, Senior Fellow – Governance Studies and Director – Center for Technology and Innovation for the Brookings Institution, highlighted steps that can be taken to overcome educational digital inequalities during COVID-19 and ensure all K-12 students can learn during school shutdowns and other uncertainties.
Dallas ISD along with 50 other organizations are joining Century Foundation’s Bridges Collaborative cohort to develop strategies that further equity in education. Learn more about their work here.
A recent McKinsey study found that the educational achievement gap has widened for Black students by 15 to 20 percent since the onset of school closures last spring. In an effort to combat the digital divide, which has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Brookings Institute has put together several ideas for ensuring all K-12 students can continue to learn.
