Jakes Foundation (TDJF) is a proud sponsor of the Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas’ 2021 Women of Distinction, which honors female leaders—from high schoolers to adults (including our own president and CEO Hattie Hill)—who have blazed a trail in their fields. In advance of the celebration, we’ve asked these extraordinary women and young women to share their experiences and offer advice for how to further advance equality in the workplace.
Margot Meyer, Senior at The Hockaday School
1. Why has it been important to you to give back to your school and community?
I kind of joined Girl Scouts because I really like camping and going with my troop to a campsite and making s’mores and bonding. I really wanted to get into community service and that was another reason why I wanted to be a Girl Scout. I think it’s important to donate and give back because I like the experiences I have with young women and being a Girl Scout is really something that’s priceless.
2. What is the one thing that you want others in your generation to know about the value of giving back, helping others and supporting your community?
Giving back to the community is very important. Sticking with Girl Scouts was the best decision I’ve ever made because, when you get to the awards and being able to give back, it’s something that you can’t ever find anywhere else. I think that it’s super important to give back to your community and the Girl Scouts.
3. Who has been the most important role model in your life?
An important role model in my life has been my troop leader Carol Golia. She’s really been with me since fifth grade, which is when I started Girl Scouts. She inspired me throughout my high school and middle school career to kind of give back and she’s been there with me through everything. I look up to her so much.
4. How has your involvement in Girl Scouts shaped who you are today?
I gained a lot of leadership skills from my Gold Award project. I am a little introverted, but I just needed a platform where I can lead people, and the Girl Scouts really gave me that. I felt that I’ve become more of a leader and I’ve also learned to better communicate with like adults through email and proposing ideas to them.
5. What can business leaders do to be more supportive to young women as they prepare to move on to the next step in their educational or professional journeys?
I would tell business leaders I think that it’s super important to give back to the community along supporting as many women as they can.
